The Piedmont Piano Company recently opened in the revitalized Uptown District of Downtown Oakland. It was formerly a drafting supply store in a past life. Piedmont Piano redid the neon signage when they bought the building.

I took this photo in 2007 at a Christmas party with my Canon PowerShot SD750 point and shoot camera. I loved the scene of burning candles floating in a bowl of water. I am not the only one who loves this photos as it has been viewed 1000 times on Flickr.

Speaking of photos, it has been a very busy year of photography. I have lots of catching up to do on my photo editing. I am hoping to get some editing done during the quiet moments of holiday season. I am preparing for photo exhibits in 2010 and 2011. It is also time for me to start thinking about publishing a photo book, which is my ultimate goal. Stay tuned!

In June, I took a travel photography course at the Berkeley Public Library. The original focus of the class was travel photography but it became more of a photography 101 course which better served the needs of the students. I took this course for two reasons: You can always learn something new and to support a friend whom I encouraged to take the course. We met for four Saturdays in June and it was a very imformative class. I was able to learn new ways of using my DSLR (digital single lens relflex) as well as my point and shoot cameras.

The photo mosiac above was created using Picasa. After our third class, we went to the Berkeley Farmer’s Market on a photo stroll. The goal of this assignment was to take photos of things that caught our eye including being able to ask people to take photos of them. It was fun and people were nice about having their photo taken. For our final class, we did show and tell, showing the photos from the previous week’s assignment. In addition, I brought in some of my jazz photography to show the class.

I had the pleasure of meeting spoken word artist Joyce Lee when she recently performed with singer Valerie Troutt at Yoshi’s San Francisco. Her performance was spectacular.

Ernestine told her band, “Play like you had the blues last night.” That is exactly what they did.

The Fillmore Jazz Festival was held July 4 and 5 on Fillmore Street running from Eddy Street up to Jackson Street. There were three different performance stages featuring jazz, blues, latin and soul music. There were even swing dancing lessons.

My photo highlights  include the Marcus Shelby Jazz Orchestra f/t Faye Carol, Marcus Shelby & Friends (@ Yoshi’s SF), Bay Area Blues Society, and Kim Nalley.
